Authorities Confirm Shark Sighting at Twilight Beach

Tragedy has struck in Esperance, Western Australia, after a swimmer was fatally bitten by a shark on Saturday afternoon. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Laeticia Brouwer, was surfing with her father at Kelp Beds Beach when the attack occurred.

According to Fisheries officers, the shark sighting was confirmed at 1327pm on January 7th at Twilight Beach, a popular swimming spot near the town center. The species of shark responsible for the attack has not yet been determined.

Emergency services responded to the scene and rushed Laeticia to hospital, but she sadly succumbed to her injuries. Her father, who witnessed the attack, is said to be in shock but otherwise unharmed.

Local authorities have closed several beaches in the area as a precaution and are urging swimmers to be vigilant. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has also deployed shark detection equipment in the vicinity of the attack.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit Esperance community. Residents and visitors are being advised to remain cautious when entering the ocean and to follow all beach safety instructions.

Laeticia's family and friends have expressed their profound grief and devastation at her tragic death. They have requested privacy during this difficult time.

The Esperance Shire Council has extended its condolences to the Brouwer family and has offered support to the community in dealing with this traumatic event.
